Broadband Tunable Filter

The SIMTRUM BBTF series Bandwidth-Adjustable Filters are built based on a platform of free-space optical Fourier transformation combined with diffraction grating. This device is a 2-port fiber-optic component. When a broadband optical spectrum is injected into the input port, the tunable filter selects a target band for output while suppressing the remaining spectral components.

 

Wavelength tuning is actuated by either a precise micrometer driver or a built-in micro stepper motor. When the motorized actuation scheme is employed, the filter can be connected to a computer via a USB interface. The tuning process is monitored in real-time by a built-in encoder and controlled dynamically in a closed loop.

 

The unique optical design provides a flat-top transmission profile while achieving low insertion loss and low Polarization-Dependent Loss (PDL). The precise tuning mechanism ensures high wavelength resolution and excellent wavelength repeatability. Both manual and electric versions are available, covering various communication bands including X-, O-, S-, C-, and L-bands.

1,Light enters from the "Fiber Optic Input Collimator" and ultimately exits from the "Fiber Optic Output Collimator".

2,Collimator: Its function is to transform the divergent light emitted from the optical fiber into collimated light (parallel beams), and conversely, to efficiently couple collimated light from free space back into an optical fiber.

3,Grating: The grating operates based on the principles of diffraction and interference. According to the diffraction equation, light of different wavelengths is diffracted at different angles.

4,Fourier Transform Lens: This lens is used to focus the light dispersed by the grating and perform a Fourier transform. It focuses different wavelengths of light onto distinct spatial locations at its rear focal plane, thereby converting angular separation into spatial displacement.

5,Movable Aperture: This aperture physically blocks most of the light, allowing only a narrow range of wavelengths to pass through. By precisely moving this aperture laterally, different wavelength bands can be selected to pass, thereby tuning the central wavelength of the filter.

6,Anti-Fourier Transform Lens: This lens performs the inverse Fourier transform, reconverting the spatially filtered light field back into an angular distribution.

7,Grating: The second grating is used to compensate for the angular deviation introduced by the first grating, eliminate residual dispersion, and ensure the output beam is correctly aligned for coupling into the output fiber.

  1. Operating Principle and TuningMechanism

Users can easily control the filter's wavelength tuning using any serial communication software on a PC (e.g., HyperTerminal or Tera Term).

The command set is straightforward, allowing users to easily drive the filter to find its home position, tune to the desired center wavelength of the transmission band, or move to any specified position within its range.
